SICK PEAHEN

I have only had experience with one sinus infection, and he got it when my handyman cleaned the chicken coop that adjoined his pen.

It didn't swell quite that bad tho.

Ok, so let's say I do this...will her eye lid open on it's own or will I have to assist it? And How do I assist opening it...with my fingers I guess?

You ever had a really bad cold where you woke in the morning and had your lids stuck together? With a warm, wet cloth or paper towel you should be able to moisten it and then gently pry it open with your fingers.

SHe might even be able to open theceye herself after you use the warm cloth to wipe. I think rather than pry the eye open just keep wipinggently til she is able to open it.

I had kittens were they had that and it took an hour or so after clearing the gunk to open them.

If you have a good relationships with your vet, ask him for some antibiotic eye drops. It also seems to help with the sinuses.

Well, once the eye is open, will that allow the fluid to escape or should the area be drained with say, a needle, etc..?

We have used Q-tips wetted with saline solution to soften the crust. I usually held the bird while DW would dig the yellowish/white cottage cheese infection out of the eye cavity. After cleaning the eye she would apply Neosporin (without pain meds) to the eye. It is really gross and you will have to have your girlfriend help to either hold the hen or do the cleaning. Another option is to sit on top of the hen, but you might need to put her into a bag, you will need two hands to work with the Q-tip and squeeze the infection out from behind the eye.

It is not for the weak stomach, DW did a LOT of scooping with the Q-tip to get as much of the infection as she could out. I probably would have stopped much sooner, but she was a trooper and did a great job.

If you can, take pictures, I'm sure they will be helpful to the next person with a similar situation.

Some background here. Kyle bought the pair from me last fall, poor guy had to wait a month for the Corid and Worming to run its course. Once the fecal exam came back clean I let him come and get them. He told me today that the results of the fecal exam he had done this week came back 'clear'. So this isn't a secondary infection to the eye. The symptoms read to me to be a respiratory infection as he also noted mucus in the throat and nasal drainage.

@GLPEAFOWL , is there any sneezing or coughing? I remember you telling me she was wiping her face on her shoulder and yawning, but I forgot about the sneezing or coughing. Tell us about the strength of the Baytril you have and if you have enough to get through the weekend. You probably should try giving the shot in the breast like Kathy does hers. Go back and read her instructions on how to do that.
