I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to let people know how things resolved. The rest of our chickens never did show any sign of illness. I talked to a vet at the local USDA office, and based on that fact, and on the symptoms and circumstances I described, he felt it most likely that she had some sort of "mechanical" problem and became septic when she was unable to pass an egg.
