sick rooster, help!

i'm sorry you lost him. Wanted to share with you though that we had a hen once that was that way. She seemed Ok, then lost weight (lots) over a period of a couple of days, and got very
lethargic. When I caught her and picked her up, same thing, water poured from her mouth and nose. She died shortly thereafter. No clue what it was; none of the others ever got sick.
I kind of wondered if it mght have been poison of some kind, maybe a weed or berry she ate? Or some some sort of bug, or who knows. Anyway, it's true...they don't show symptoms usually
until they are quite sick, so as soon as you see symptoms, you need to be prepared to do something to treat, if you can. You certainly didn't do anything wrong, so it wasn't your fault. We can onlly try a lot of times, and hope it works. Sometimes it does work, so don't get discouraged.

Here's a reference to the gurgling sound you were talking about. And Gapeworms are relatively common. Had he ever been wormed with fenbendazole or albazen? That's what takes care of Gapeworms. Here's what the worm article said:

Gape Worm

Gape worm is a parasite that lives in the lungs and trachea. It is often fatal.

Typically, eggs are picked up from the ground or intermediate hosts such as worms or snails.

Gasping for breath or ‘gaping’ as it is known is the biggest sign of gape worm.

Head shaking and neck stretching are common. When birds are held, gurgling can often be heard.

thank you for sharing this. knowing that the same thing happened to another chicken somehow makes me feel better; i mean, don't get me wrong, i'm very sorry for your loss as well... but Macadamia's death was so sudden, and so odd, and the liquid pouring from him was so strange... that it's just mystifying. i don't know. it makes me feel like i did something wrong. and knowing that same thing happened to another chicken makes it feel less like my fault, or something.
