Sick Rooster

What would causes my Silkie rooster to have blood in his stool? It is dark red blood not bright red blood like you would see in from intestinal lining or coccidiosis. He had sour crop in the early Spring this year. I got that resolved and then last month he got very weak and was stumbling and losing his footing it looked like Mareks so I treated with hypericum and colloidal silver. He seemed to have completely recovered and now this. I have looked at literally hundreds of pictures of chicken fecal matter but none of the pictures look like his. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I will try to get a picture today. Not too many vets around here deal with chickens. None of my other chickens have any symptoms or signs of illness.

Welcome to BYC. Do you have a local regular vet where you might be able to talk them into just doing a fecal float test for worms and coccidiosis? Many vets won't see chickens, but thinga are changing. Even if they won't see chickens they are all trained in fecal floats. Both coccidiosis and capillary worms can cause blood in droppings. You could then treat for coccidiosis with Corid, or use a good wormer such as Valbazen or SafeGuard. They may also do a gram stain for enteritis. There could be some other cause for bleeding, but at least this would give you a start.

Thank you for the info. I'm calling around now to see if one of the local vets will do a fecal float. My whole flock was wormed in August with SafeGuard. I usually worm twice a year as my chickens free range from about 7:00 am to 7:00 pm in the warmer months. I'm in Pennsylvania. They get locked in at night. We have sand in our coop and run the droppings are cleaned up everyday. Sometimes twice a day. I use DE and PDZ in the coop. There are 21 chickens in our big coop, 19 hens 2 roosters. I have a smaller coop with a separate run for my bantams. I only have 9 in there.

Well, I hope he doesn't have Mareks, but one of Mareks' unfortunate properties is causing a lack of immunity to common diseases. I hope that it doesn't keep happening, and that he gets better.

Thank you. I love him and he is so sweet. He has been having issues since April. He keeps my bossy hens in line too. Our flock would not be the same without him. His name is Connor and he comes when called.
