Sleeping on the floor of the coop is not normal for most chickens. His comb looks awful, poor boy. He’s sleeping on the ground in the coop. That’s not normal either is it? This is Earl btw
I went ahead and took one while he was sleeping.I will take pictures tomarrow.
Lydia {sorry}Hi lynda
Thank you. I was afraid it was something he could pass to my other 10 chickensOh yeah. He's been in a heck of a fight. Better check him over for other injuries. Roosters use spurs and he could have serious wounds under his wings or elsewhere where feathers are hiding them. If infection has begun, he could be in more serious trouble than just his ego.
If no other roosters, he could have gotten an ass whoopin from one of the hens that didn’t want to mate... but def sounds like peck marksDo you have the ability to post a photo of him and his comb?
If this came on suddenly, if he was fine just prior to this, if you didn't notice any black spots on his comb previously, then I am going to guess he got a good ass-whooping from another rooster who is higher ranking.
The black spots, if uneven, some small, some large and irregularly shaped, it would fit into a fight with another roo. In these fights between two roosters, the loser often sulks in an out-of-the-way place to make himself invisible to the roo that did this to him.
If I'm right, he will probably recover his ego, and return to normal behavior tomorrow.
