My kids are the same way 5,4,2yrs. From their first exposure to animals, we have several so from birth, they are taugh to respect animals, treat them gently, ect. They may throw a temper-tanrums, but never take something they wanted. I wasn't prepared for that at all.

So sorry for your loss.

That's so horrible! It's scary how fragile life can be... Not to be mean, and I know it wasn't on purpose, but I hope the mom has a talk with the 3 year old about not taking things like that... It's never too early!

I may sound a little harsh, but that 3 year old should have been taught a lesson right then and there.... and if he were my child you can bet that I would have been doing some "teaching". I don't let my kids snatch things out of my hands or anyone else's.... and that would have been the perfect opportunity for this mother to teach her child that lesson. He needed to understand what he did. And that actions have consequences.... if not, what stops him from running out in the street when his mom tells him not to? What if that chick were a poisonious snake on the stoop that she's begging him NOT to pick up.... and he just grabs it because he wants to and will not listen to his mom.....

Sorry for the rant.... and I'm so sorry for your chickie!!!! I have 12 chicks right now too (9 days old) and I can just imagine how you feel.

I think some kids are just rough. Maybe they don't have any animals in their family so they don't know how to handle them.
Last summer a friend of mine brought her kids over. They were throwing my chicks. I was right there with them and ended it. I was ticked! These two kids also just killed their guinea pig by throwing it up into the air and bouncing it off the bed. The mom went and got them a new one.

That poor guinea pig! They are kind of fragile and can be killed just be being dropped. Young kids, especially rough ones, really have no business with a guinea pig as a pet.
