Sickness spreading among chicks? Please help!

Thank SO MUCH for the additional info.

Given that most are improving, and all of the factors, I did think the treatment I am doing is reasonable. I'm thankful I'm able to watch them closely.

2 of my hens have breathing proplems, ones going though a moult, and the other is just old, I have no vets around to get them seen to , but iv got some amoxicillin 500mg , I was told to spilt 1 capsule in half and then spilt this half into 14 (16mg) and give once a day for 14 days, but looking up people are saying to give either 125mg twice a day or 250mg once aday, and anybody help on correct doses, also some puts them in water and some say desolve half a capsule in water and syringe stright into hens mouth ?

The dose my vet had me use was 57 mg per pound twice a day. How much do they weigh? Who ever is telling you to give 16 mg once a day is wrong. The amoxicillin dose for chickens is much more than it is for cats and dogs, and it must be given at least twice a day.

not sure of her weight but she's a black rock , and the other is a ex battery hen, they are both about the same size, neither have lost any weight, still eating and drinking, but noisy breathing and coughing , mainly the black one, who's going though the moult.

We are seeing improvement at any rate.

I had 4 or so separated for treatment yesterday who are now in the run, chasing bugs, peeping, scratching, climbing on the mamas, running in and out of the coop (it's raised so the ramp is long and an exercise itself). Both mamas WOULD choose today to teach dust-bathing - I'm well used to coming across a hen stretched on her side on the ground, one leg stuck out, looking dead, but I wasn't prepared to see yesterday's sick chicks looking that way! Ha!

The one separated is peeping more each time when I disturb her (no sound yesterday), wings a little higher but not quite tight. Her poop looks much better. Eyes bright and awake. But still not strong on her legs - she stands without wobbling but not walking about and just not quite right.

But I think it's progress. I'm still very guarded though. I'm dipping her beak every little while in the medicated water, but unless I see even more improvement within maybe 3 more hours, I think I'm going to give by syringe. I may anyway. I'm concerned that she stay hydrated too.

Sorry, I'm using this too as a sort of log, as well as a sounding board and appreciate everyone's input.

The two that have died yesterday and last night were also quite small compared to age-breed-mates. This Wyandotte is larger. But I wonder if the breed, or the strain, is just not as vigorous. When I first got the chicks, one of the Wyandottes died within a couple of hours (and they were hours-old when I got them - I know some losses of just-hatched chicks sometimes happen. But overall the Wyandottes have ALL given me some worry and this is the only one alive, while the others got sick in smaller percentages and rebounded faster. My sample is of course very small though.

If they are full grown and normal size they probably weigh at least 5 pounds. Would be best to weigh them. Can you post a video of them coughing?

Suggestion... you should make a new thread and have these posts about your chickens coughing moved to it. :)

Ok I thought I was in a new thread , silly me , I did try to add video only 16seconds long but said file to big .

:) I don't mind sharing btw, but I'm sure you'd get better answers and make things less confusing for folks who might want to help. But I'm too new to want to be suggesting that. Thanks, Casportpony. :)

And I hope your hens get better, aliren!
