From what I have gathered over the years, it is usually.....

11/32" drill bit for PVC or other thick plastic.

5/16" drill bit for thin plastics.

All I remember from when I made my 5 gallon bucket is that I had to buy a drill bit for it that was not a common size. Think it was the 11/32nds one.
