*sigh* I'm loosing my touch. (Warning: Hi-jacked by Em)

I couldn't blame it on the offspring. He was still in a cradle.

You'd think, after the train wrecks of the past, that I'd have to have holes in my head to even think about taking the minis to do parades again, wouldn't you? Maybe I just don't learn, but I have done it again. BB2K and I have even made new blankets for them. The float that we were part of was going with a Nativity theme; when I told BB2K, she said, "Blondie can be an angel!" I said, "yup. Betsy works just as she is; donkeys are a tradition part of nativities. OK, so she's a mule, but most people don't know the difference. Syd . . . . . Syd's gonna have a cow, maybe she should be one?"

As tempting as that idea was, I decided to go with a slightly exotic carousel horse/ king's charger sort of idea . . . some lights that I found at Walmart sorta clinched that one. And with her buddies all blinged out, it seemed unfair to leave Betsy out, so she got a fancy new blanket, too. Not totally fitting with the theme, though it did have the word "joy" worked into the print.

Last night was our first parade; the Island of Lights Christmas parade down on Pleasure Island. Other than the fact that we left a lot later than intended (and so arrived a lot later) it went pretty well. Unfortunately for Syd, we unloaded at the head of the lineup, so she basically got thrown in at the deep end - a bunch of bands tuning up, scads of people milling about; everywhere she looked was a confusion of noise and lights and people. She wasn't altogether together, but she wasn't totally wigging, either. Fortunately, when we found our float, it was in a relatively calm part of the lineup, so I had a chance to help her find her brain. She found plenty of things to spook at (a guy on his skateboard, for example) but since we had a good long wait before it was our turn, we had worked through the worst of it and she was actually listening by the time the parade started. We got to say hello to lots of people, of course, and there was one guy and his toddler daughter who went to the store to get some carrots for the ponies when they learned that I had forgotten to bring some (bad Bunny!)

This time, the firetrucks and police cars were well ahead of us, and we could barely hear the sirens and horns. However, there were some classic cars behind us, and of course, they had to rev their engines. Nobody tipped over (Cars reference), but both Blondie and Syd got a bit rattled by the noise. At one point, I saw Syd licking and chewing so hard, it almost looked like the "I'm a baby, don't hurt me" mouthing of a foal.

And though there were times when she was pulling, there were times when she was walking on a slack lead and 'whoa-ing' on command, too (and of course there were carrots and peppermints for the pretty pony!) All in all, a pretty fun night (though it was after 10 o'clock when we got home, and my tail's been draggin' today!)

Well, it's Christmas; time for sparkling if ever there was. These are nighttime parades, one of the requirements is that the entries be lighted. I like there to be blue lights on one of them (Wisher may know why) and this time, it's Syd's turn.
