They say that it takes a certain level of consciousness to "know" that you're alive. I suppose it might take a similar level of cognition to be aware that you're dead!

It defies all logic or reason, but it's a system by which the birds that eat their way through more than 100 lbs of feed in a week can be described as "a few chickens." And how the number of chickens doesn't change, even when you hatch batch after batch of chicks, and don't sell or kill any. In some vague way, it resembles the Federal tax codes.

I don't really have that problem, because I always mess up hatching and I kill AT LEAST one bird a month.
