@Alaskan , here's a quick guide to Finnish history, with many factual errors I would assume. Back in the day (up until 1809) Finland was just Western Sweden. Then the Russians took us. During this time, it was still the Swedish families who maintained positions of power in the country, although Finnish speaking families quickly gained power too. During the Russian reign, Finnish nationalism started to emerge, led mainly by these families, many of whom changed their family names to Finnish translations of their names. Finally, in 1917 Finland managed to declare itself independent from Russia. The strong Finnish national identity remained in Finnish Swedes, and I define myself as a Finn who's native tongue happens to be Swedish, as most of us Finnish-Swedes do. I cheer for Finland in a hockey game between the two countries, etc. But the relationship is just playful, we make fun of Swedes, they make fun of us. A bit like Yanks and Canucks.
