Silence Is Not Golden Here

Well, the guy who left me hanging yesterday messaged. Apparently some chain on his truck broke and he texted his wife, asking her to contact me and she didn't get the text until this morning.

So, I think I'll give him a second chance.

I had a guy who wanted my Silver Sebright cockerel for a ranch roo... first person to contact me about him. He was going to call and come out that night. Never heard from him... next day a lady contacted me who wanted him for a pet to start a bachelor pad, came right out, loved him, was delighted to take my Silkie cockerel as well so that they stayed together - they'd been raised together in the brooder. I was happy to have them go together, so neither ended up without a familiar bird in a strange place.

Next day - two days after he was supposed to come out - the guy contacted me to say he'd been in the hospital and was still interested in the Sebright. I felt bad that I'd already given him away... but not all that bad. If he was released from the hospital after only two days, he wasn't in there for anything serious enough that he couldn't have given me a call or had someone call me to let me know what was happening. He had my number.

Friend looked at the guy's Facebook page. I don't use 'F'-Book. Said it was nothing but depression and how much he hates life...

I have the feeling Angel and possibly Pouf dodged a 'bullet' on that one.

This guy wants them for yard entertainment but doesn't want to start from scratch with chicks. I personally agree. I think chicks raised with older birds usually behave better.

I think they're happier as chicks, as well, with older birds around. My current batch of mutts love watching the older chicks being chickens, and clearly emulate them. Sebrights and Silkie were the first chickens I got and raised entirely in a brooder until going outside by themselves. Nothing mature available around here - I actually got the silkie hoping it would be a pullet, for a future broody. Now I'm leaning strongly toward getting some more Silkies next year... sexed. I'd rather get some from a show breeder, but I think MPC is the only place that sells them sexed that I've found.

I did find a source for standard Sultans last night. Given the temperature range here - 100+ during the summer, -20 during the winter - I think I'll have to consider standard rather than bantam. Need to read up on it more, but that's a possibility for next year, as well.
