From everything I've heard, your best bet if you have to start from scratch are Bantam Cochins or silkies.

You know, I just realized that I've been hovering near the brooder, waiting for the chicks to poop so I'd know everything was working. One of them just did, waddle dance, splorch, big first poop. When chicken poop makes me happy, I may need a new hobby. In the meanwhile... the other one still needs to go...

Didn't like the look of the more recent pip. Decided to pull the egg and check it... very quiet, weak noises inside. Flaked back a little shell, and the chick had cracked the shell, but hadn't managed to break through the membrane inside. So I opened it a little hole, and the peeping immediately got stronger. Put it back in to finish on its own.

I'm finishing the fencing on my 40x60 grower pen and getting my birds ready for the long drive to the show tomorrow
