Unfortunately, lack of knowledge about diseases isn't just in chickens. Just look at how many people get a new puppy and think nothing of hauling it all over town to meet everyone and be everywhere, without getting its shots first - and then are shocked when Parvo happens.

*Sigh* Parvo. I was at the grocery store the other day and this dude in back of me in the checkout line had about the sickest puppy I'd ever seen. Said he just picked it up from a bad situation and was going to try and nurse it back to health. It was a little yellow lab. The poor thing could barely lift its head up and was so lethargic looking that I doubt it made it through the night. Just another reason that I absolutely can't stand backyard breeders.

I agree completely. NEUTER YOUR PETS! My dogs are neutered. My cats are. My snakes are not... but since they're kept one to a cage - no, snakes should NOT be kept in groups! - that's not an issue. Besides, I'm not sure it's possible. My horses are not, because trying to find a vet who will spay a female horse when it's not a medical emergency is impossible.

On another note, I think one of the Muttly chicks that I had pegged as a probable boy confirmed it. While they were out rampaging tonight, he stood in the middle of the run and screamed for a hen, then when he didn't get one he climbed up my leg to crawl under my hand and settled in happily. I've been much more hands-off with these chicks, so they're not as clingy usually as the Seramas are. That's the first time one of them has come to me demanding attention. If it's true that the cockerels tend to be more affectionate and clingy as chicks... that seems like a decent indication!

One of my Serama boys, the blue splash, is getting red patches on his shoulders now. I'm disappointed - before this, he was solid blue splash, and I'd have loved to have him stay that way. But with Seramas, you never know! Especially with eBay eggs. I've also discovered that he has an 'off' button... if I lightly pet the base of his neck, just above the shoulders, his head and neck flop down completely limp and stretched out. It's like it sends him into a trance. None of the others do that.

She's been MIA for almost 3 days.
No sign of her. Also don't have a rooster so I don't think she's hatching anything.

This is the worst Friday the 13th EVER!! The whole week has been cursed! Was she confined and now you can't find her or was she free ranging?

Weird. When I candled my eggs and noticed veins, I did notice that quite a few appeared to have veins extending down from the air pocket, rather than from an embryo, but I just figured the embryo was up near the top. Now I'm questioning that.

I just candled again - and of the 17 that looked good a couple days ago, 6 are looking like failures. Of the 5 that I thought were fails but left in, I removed and examined them. All five had signs of blood inside the egg.... but no sign that there was ever any embryo developing. Only the blood, nothing else.

I love the rust coloration mixed in with all colors. the true sign of a rooster. I'd love to see pics even though I know you are terrible about getting them (so you say)...

Also, YES! All my boys (because all my pets are boys - they make superior pets) are neutered. I grew up with male dogs, none neutered, but all highly trained machines. It's one or the other or better yet, both.

The storm blew over the coop with the littles. I could only find one chick. I think the others got blown away. Literally.
We have woods on one side, fields on two adjacent sides and a high speed road on the remaining side.
I have little hope of finding them. I don't even know where to start looking.

The only survivor is either Pemba or Lindi but without the other to compare to I don't know which. I've decided the make will be dubbed Pemba and the female Lindi.
The chick is 1 month old. Gender guess? It's in a towel because the poor baby was soaked.
