The resident poodle got ahold of my two year old silkie rooster and his leg might be broken, how can I tell? Or is it too early to tell?

oh no how awful!

Firstly, sit down and hold him calmly. Gently examine him carefully all up and down his body and legs. Look for small puncture wounds from dog teeth hidden in his feathers, and any skin tears. These can lead to nasty infections so he may need antibiotics and/or dressings etc.

Press gently into his abdomen, around his neck and legs and back and watch his pain reactions. He may have just bruising or more serious internal injuries. Keep a watch on these.

Check his bones from his neck, ribs, shoulders, wings, and legs down to his feet. I'm prob not using the right poultry terminology here but you know what I mean. Does anything move that seems wrong? Run your fingers around his leg joints. Do they bend the wrong way?

Set him down on the floor or on a table where he cannot run away. Is he putting weight on his legs? Is he lifting one up? Is he just sitting?

Bear in mind he will also be in shock right now. Some water with honey in it will help him feel better. Also a quarter pill of a baby aspirin for the pain. This might not be the exact right dose but it won't be enough to overdose him and it is harder to get it any smaller. Someone here may know more.

I hope he is OK.

I should add, that you should post your findings here so people can help you with the right treatment once his injuries have been identified. And post pics if you can too. Esp of the leg you think might be broken.

Cnayou post video of him walking by posting it to youtube and sharing the link here? I he walking, limping, or moving at all. Is there any swelling or heat on the leg or foot? Yo should start by building him a chicken sling, here is a good video. Keep him separated and low moment. If it is broken, you can make him a split tout of a flexible finger splint, here is a good video for that. Give him electorates in his water, and keep his food close to him. Start there, and good luck, Avery :)

Yes, check for swelling and heat. Good call. I missed that.

Over the next few days, watch out for any new symptoms that show an injury developing further which he may be in too much shock to show now, or which may just worsen over time. such as sepsis or internal bleeding.

Keep him warm, dark and calm until you've got the measure of his injuries and to help him heal.
