Silkie boy or girl?

Oh my, Steve is gorgeous! he looks like halfway between buff and partridge, but I haven't seen many buff roosters There were a lot of different coloured silkie chicks at the farm, maybe Kevin's got a bit of another colour coming through. They had a lot of lavender and partridge roosters, most of the hens were white
I would agree with you there. He is either buff x partridge or a partridge with too much gold/red in him. Either way, I get pure coloured babies (as well as some not pure coloured, but really neat looking colours anyhow) from him. I breed him to my blue hens, and get the following: Blue Calico Blue Partridge Regular Partridge White and Silver Partridge

This would be my favourite colour so far! Calico :D Here she is with daddy. I've been told she looks like a girl, so I'm hoping. She is only 8 weeks old.

this is an older female we have, their combs are the same size and shape, though its hard to tell under all the feathers

this is her at around the same age as Kevin

i cant see any difference in the combs, but its still pretty early

Aoxa that is a beautiful colour!

Thanks, and those are adorable pictures! :love

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions JUST yet.

Though you probably should have been more positive minded and named Kevin something girly for luck ;) haha

Here's how you can tell....

Rooster Hen
thick legs feels thin in comparision

huge wattles and comb small wattles and comb

grows drooping feathers by tail smooth transition from back to tail

tail that goes out and curves down goes upward and doesn't curve

packed spiny neck feathers soft wide feathers lightly packed

Uh.. This does not apply to silkies :p

In my silkie it applies but maybe I have a different type of silkie. My white silkie has all of those features, I sorta mark the tophat with the comb since it's like combs in the way that the bigger the more likely it's a rooster.

Actually not at all. The bigger, the more likely it is female.

Silkies don't get saddle feathers like other breeds.

I'm not lying he has saddle feathers, granted that it's made of super thin feathers, he still has it! Thanks for the tophat info. With my silkies, our male has the biggest tophat so I figured that's the way they were.

Pictures would help.. I have never seen anything like that.

My rooster is over 2 years old and does not have saddle feathers. He has very coarse hackle feathers though.
