Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Next time, when you know you have a Blue, and she's dark, be sure to hold your ground. I have dark blues, too. Most of mine are. They look black if you didn't know better. If a judge is in the know, he will check the undercoat. There is no DQ for being too dark of a blue-- blue is just not black, so it doesn't matter how dark they are. Glad you got to go to your first show, though!

So embarrassing, and so sorry! I guess, live and learn!

There is no "blue splash". It's Splash and splash only. You can talk about a lighter or darker base, but they are still ultimately a "splash".

I've noticed people here and there saying 'blue splash' and it's incorrect, and not sure where they got that term. If you go read the SOP for splash, and I would post the link, but I can't find it right now (ugh), but it gives an excellent description of splash, and it being a blue based bird.

I agree. But I don't know if other Splash are recognized in other breeds or not. I have friends working with Splash marans and they must have a white base, not a blue, but that has nothing to do with silkies, anyway.

Thank you so much for the clarification on the splash. I thought was quite funny because I have never really cared for splash birds with Alot of splash markings, that is exactly what I came home with and I just love her. I will post pics today once I clean her up, I am embarrassed of her right now. She is looking like a HOT mess. lol

I was thinking that any judge worth his weight would know that she was blue, she would have done well with the other blues, she had the best type by far. Next time, I will be sticking to my guns.

I was impressed with my DH, he looked at all the birds and he said "You know, OUR birds look just as nice as these birds do, you have done a nice job "collecting" good stock." He is not a chicken person so that was a nice compliment. I like how all of a sudden they were OUR birds. ...

splash should be light blue based no mater the breed

Thanks Hawkeye. I was thinking all breeds were the same for the splash colouration. I stand corrected! It makes sense.

I really like the splash, they can have so much variation! They are just beautiful in some, and not so much in others. I really like their diversity! That is great that you did so well and love your DH's comment. Nice to know you didn't feel out of your depth! :) Keep at it! You're going to be a show-junkie before you know it! hehe!

Actually, I'm just not so sure that is true. I don't know how I even got into that discussion, but I was talking to a couple people that breed marans and we were talking about the difference in Splash and they were saying that along with their breed, there are a couple of others that require a white base for their Splash. In fact, they were trying to correct ME when I was saying my splash were a blue base. They jumped all over that and we came to realize, that our standards are just different.

They had told me that if they had blue in their splash, they would cull them. Crazy, hu?? I don't know anything about other breeds for Splash (since I don't breed them and have never looked up their standard), so I can't really argue it and say it's not true. Just repeating what I was told. I'm guessing they do know what they are doing. Or... I would hope so! Again... I have no way of knowing since I really don't care to look up the Splash standard for all breeds. hehe!!

I wonder if Sonoran would know, since she is working with mottleds and other breeds...??

Is anyone else besides me going to the ASBC Eastern Nationals?? I would love to see you all face to face! Would be so much fun!!

I have the standard of perfection at home. I will look into the splash description in other breeds and let you know Hawkeye. Looking at pictures of my splash Ameraucana bantam, her base really isn't white though. More of a very pale blue.

She was not happy here, and my fiancée cut too close on her nail and it's bloody. She didn't even flinch. We had thought it stopped bleeding, but were informed the next morning that her cage looked like a murder scene, and our friend cleaned it all up before judging. Thank God for friends!

Does anyone have issues with beard picking in silkies? If so, what do you do to stop it? I'm not experiencing it with our silkies, but another bearded breed (Ameraucana bantam). However, I really don't like the tension on that thread, so I thought I'd ask here.

I have two pullets that I believe are responsible. 3 of the 5 have no beards, and they were picked clean. I think they were trying to sabotage their chances at the show

Splash is an AOV for Ameraucanas. You can show any colour, but you won't win BB with them of course. However, she was a product of a Blue x Blue mating - so I don't see why it's taking them so long to admit splash as a colour in Ameraucanas.

She's definitely not my best. I'd say she would be my least pretty girl. I show all 5 of my breeding birds though. They are so rare here. Especially the bantams.
