Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

We were talking about wings not too long ago, and I caught a picture of my smutty buff (or buff partridge) or whatever you want to call the colour.. Is this how a wing should be held? I'm noticing everyone starting to hold their wings like this as the weather gets colder

that nice tight wing and she is a pretty buff if breed to right buff male should make you some lovely buffs, smutty buff keep pigment in the comb

Hi I havent been on here forever...thought I need to come back as I am loving all the great ideas and replies on here. My son shows silkies all over and does well with them..we have a lot of varieties...white...black...buff..partridge...blue..splash and dabble in paints and porcelains. Love the silkies they are so beautiful and friendly. So i will try to keep in touch with the thread and maybe i can contribute to the conversations.
Hope you will!

The babies, Isabel threw the blue and Ingrid threw the splash. When do the markings usually come on the splash? One of the pullets in my white pen layed an egg today...I don't normally check their nest boxes because they are young, but today I felt the need, I was pleasantly surprised. :) Now well have to see if its fertile, I would like to know if the little white cockerel is doing his job. I will be blown away if it is fertile.

If I breed my white roo, to my blue hen for black chicks, what is the likelyhood that they will be pure black without leakage? According to the genetic calculator, it says "black unicolor". Ha anyone bred this combo, if so, what was your outcome?
Beautiful babies!!

Yes thank you so much to be so clear! I admire your knowledge of breeding and, as a soon to be amateur, it is fascinating to get tips and advices from experienced breeders. I will definitely read and study the APA and ABA standards.
If I had the money, I would have purchased already grown birds but unfortunately it wasn't the case.
I will have to cull some of my flock, but it is hard to do it at first! I am attached to all of them, but in the back of my head, a little voice is telling me to get rid of them because they don't have all the characteristics that i am looking for or they are siblings in that case.
Here are other pictures of my dirty Berta (BTW is she considered black?) On the third and fourth pictures you can see Sophie (light blue and very dirty too lol)

I like Berta a lot. I think a good bath and blow dry would make her tail much rounder. I don't see anything that would keep her from my breeding pen but you must be the judge of her wing fan and feet. Sophie is nice also but looks too leggy and long necked in these photos. Smallish crest though but nice wing carriage. Nice chest. Hope you will get some expert advice. :)

I don't see a way to improve this wing carriage. I would like to hear what the experts think. :)

I didn't know this about buffs and comb color. Great info for my journal!
So adorable, Jessy!!

Wing position looks good to me

For the sake of argument, let's assume your birds are unrelated and your rooster can be bred with the three hens. Could the experienced breeders please share specific suggestions on how to develop a breeding program with this initial stock?
Dragonlady, Hawkeye, Jacknme, Peepblessed, ScaredofShadows, Sonoran....would you mind sharing what might work well with this configuration of birds? And at what point would new stock need to be introduced?
Thanks in advance for your help!

I waited to get an answer from my friend, and i guess they are related. Now, she doesn't know for sure if they are coming from the same BBS pen, but she hatched them together. I tried my best to get some shots of my splash roo (Maxime). Any critiques are welcome lol. He is very dirty right now, sorry. I have a dark blue which iam quite happy with (she has a nicer bonnet than in that picture), but it's so hard to get a nice shot arg. My splash hen doesn't have a nice puff, and my light blue is in between. They are around 6 months old i believe. Anyways, here they are:

This one is long in the back, but you also have to keep in mind that you must judge your own birds, because we see them for a captured second in a picture where their stance may not be true to how they really look most of the time. Does this bird look like she has a long back most of the time? These are obviously not hatchery quality birds, so already, they are of a better quality. Count toes, fan out wings to be sure there are no splits and directional problems with the secondaries.

This guy is looking very young and not filled out. Make sure his comb is very dark and has no horns on it-- it should be smooth. If he is a bearded (which it looks like he is) you shouldn't be able to see wattles-- and both should be a very dark color-- not red. He's also pretty leggy and tall, so it's not ideal, but if everything else is good.. it's all a balancing act. I would give him more time to fill in and see what he looks like then. Check his wings for a good fan with no splits or missing feathers.

It will be fun to have you contribute!

I've been meaning to ask this. I have 2 hens from an entirely different breeder than my rooster and another hen. If I breed a rooster from one of the hens that wasn't from the same breeder as my rooster, would this be a huge problem? I know they are unrelated. I know which birds are mothered by which hen (for the most part). I hope I can do this, as I don't want to bring in new blood yet. The only one I would want to get a new rooster from only breeds whites - so I'm pretty much stuck.. At least for now..
I don't see any problem with that. You can breed them back to each other as well, just make darned sure you know what faults you are working with-- as Peep said, you can wind up with a fault that is then compounded.

This bird could be blue-- look at her under fluff (pull her feathers back) and if they are a lighter grey in there, she is blue. A black will be black all the way down to the shaft. Also, you said these birds are related, so it's likely they came from a Splash/Blue mating, which would make her blue. I have dark blues that look black as well. But they are obviously blue when you look at their lighter fluff under the feathers. This bird is really pretty-- short back, nice crest. But she isn't as low to the ground as you want them to be. You don't want to see a girl's legs. ;) But she's not bad. Before I'd cull, I'd check her wings and feet and her colors on comb, eyes, etc. :) If those are okay, this is not the worst you could do!

This lighter blue (which is more correct in color, BTW) is leggy, but not bad in shape (other than the long legs). If her wings and feet check out, I don't see why you couldn't use her. You ended up with some pretty nice birds.

Nice wings!

ADORABLE Showgirls!! Love them! :) Your white is also beautiful! Looks like she's going to have a full crest on him/her.

Wheaten based birds (E^Wh) have less smut and black, but also tend to have diluted eyes, skin (including redder combs) and a diluted depth of colour in the plumage. Brown (aka partridge) based birds (e^b) have more smut, more black in wings and tail, but have brighter buff feathers, darker skin, eyes and comb.

So would this correctly be called a partridge based buff?

She has nice dark eyes/skin. I'm glad to know her wings are in the right place. Most of them are just like this, except for my white, who seems to have very shredded feathers that are not held tightly. I'll be using her elsewhere and not breeding her to my colours. By elsewhere I mean against my first generation sizzles to get better feet and skin.

I really like the smutty look to her. I'd like more just like her :p
