Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Always look forward to pictures.

Breeding splash to splash will eventually lead to very pale splash but not in the short run. Here is a chart to show you how the blue gene works.
The way the Blue gene works in a breeding can be broken down as follows:
1) Blue x Blue: This will produce 25% black, 50% blue, 25% splash.
2) Black x Blue: Produces 50% black and 50% blue.
3) Black x Splash: You'll get 100% blue.
4) Blue x Splash: Produces 50% blue and 50% splash.
5) Splash x Splash: This will give you 100% Splash.
6) Black x black: 100% black

Thanks for the pictures! Beautiful boy you have!

Where do you get this gene information? I'd like to know a few outcomes of various color crosses

Yeah, I just talked to a woman at the blue seal store who is also a judge and she said that it's not surprising they left, they don't like to stay, she said she would be out of there as soon as she could

So how are we supposed to learn anything? I am going to bring Ice in to show her though and see what she thinks.

They are supposed to have blackish blue on their head and hackles and uniform slate blue throughout the rest of the body. The others were the typical dark blue you see.
I can understand wanting to speak with the judge, it would drive me crazy not knowing. Both birds are beautiful, it would have been wonderful to get some feedback. I have blues myself, and their is such a huge range in color.

That's awesome Jacquie...I'm glad you enjoyed it...this was my second show and they can be a bit intimidating and I don't really know what to do or where to stand ect...lol...but most of the time the more experienced exhibitors are great and wiling to help and give you advice...did you go home with the black that won? she was a good looking black...I was talking to your bird...how old is she? she looks young...

i am going to the Newnan show and can't wait to see all the amazing silkies that will be there...

) wow so sorry it replied before I as done! I was curious as if to what they are calling "pink" (as I know this one is died lol) but as I said in my edit I have heard people calling salmon pink? I am just curious is to how the pink came up? Did it pop up in breeding or is it just a bunch of genetic possibilities hmmmmm lol

yes thanks for taking pics of all the winners...really interesting..i wish i had done that at my show...i tried to take some of the amazing splash but as they were on the bottom row of two stacked rows it was hard to both get a good pic and also to really see the beautiful birds properly....

Don't feel too bad. As much as I support the idea of asking the judge I find many of the judges are simply "too nice" to give a really frank answer about our birds, even when we beg. They really don't want to cut up our birds - and no bird is perfect. You will probably get more useful feedback here, quite frankly.
