It is one of the reasons I use glass water bottoms only during the first week. Never plastic.

I scorch them in a hot fire and spray it with neem oil before bringing them in.
Lice are much bigger pale pink critters that leave white egg cases , particularly in the beards in Silkies.I cannot tell you how many louse balls I pulled out of Silkies bought off traders' row when I got started. Yuck ! Mites are blood suckers that are very small dots that look like red pepper down near the skin. They multiply faster than lice, I think. Permethrin will get both, as will 1% Coral powder from Jeffers or Omaha Vaccine.Liquid Permethrin in it's diluted form, is used on human head lice too.I've used it on every kind of bird for years from canaries, parrots to all species of wild birds that I re-habed for the DNR. Never lost a bird to it yet, and no bugs.

EVERYBODY REPEAT AFTER ME........SEVIN DUST WILL NOT KILL MITES OR LICE !!Yuk! Well I now know I found mites...yes they look like tiny little red dots moving...I was cleaning out the little coop to put my bantam Cochins in and saw them moving on the sand...I think they were on the wood that the waterer was sitting on as I didn't find them anywhere else...
I dusted the entire coop with sevin...and also put ivermectin pour on for cattle on all my birds in the three coops...will that do it? Or do I need something else?
Thanks...

You need to dust or spray the birds with Permethrin, and use the liquid permethrin to spray your coops. Those bloodsuckers hide in the cracks during the day, and feed on the birds at night. I don't use ivermectin on birds. It leaves oil on Silkies' feathers, and you can kill birds using too much.
Monday would be good. Sevin gegrades in 24 hours. The important thing is to get the bugs DEAD.Lol...ok...I will get some permethrin ...but I guess I should wait a while...like delisha said above...I did use a lot of chemicals but I researched first on here and I thought that's what people were saying to use? I thought people said that sevin is safe and low in chemicals????
I feed my chickens organic but just stuffed all that up with all this stuff...
Dragonlady...how long should I now wait to use the permethrin do you think?
If you dust every month and don't show, or bring in new birds you'll probably be OK UNLESS your sparrows, etc have mites. So I don't really have to worry bout mites or live if I don't have a coop I just have a chainlink dog pen and dogs houses clean everything regularly quatrain teen new birds and dust regularly ???
