Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Quote:
I think with chickens there are very few "genetics experts".. and even then they don't all agree. Doubling all the genes, having recessive and dominant that act differently but look almost the same visually and having sex linked ones - and then UNDISCOVERED ones.. that modify what SHOULD be to what is..

I am waiting for them to build the handy-dandy hand- held DNA sequencer..

Until then I will add 1 + 1 and get however many chicks hatch.. then play detective..

ok i know that hatchery stock is far superior to the breeder/show stock that is on this thread so please dopnt rag me for having them... they are my 5yo DDs... if i let them breed how can i get the poofy heads from scratch? the roo has a HUGE comb and the hen has a tina turner mohawk thing goin on... is it possible to get the goods from hatchery? my baby wants to have baby chicks from her babies she helped raise from chicks!!!
Right now, my daughter has silkies hatching a day early in our incubator. I can not begin to express how much excitement, joy and happiness it creates to see this process. My daughter is floating on air at the moment. I bet your daughter would really love the experience. You could take fertilized eggs from your birds and borrow an incubator from a 4H group to hatch some babies. Or better yet, purchasing quality eggs would be really great. Whatever you choose, have fun with this.
