Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

WOW!!! nice birds. and I LOVE his barn set up!! In my dreams!! LOL I wonder if I could convince my DH to kick out the truck and tractor from the front part of our horse barn and build in silkie pens instead... hehe! (guessing that would be a no) But I love the little cabinets that can hold one or two birds. I could build that and stick it in my garage for sure. So it looks like he has a splash that is the most amazing bird I've seen! It definitely had a big crest on it, but still, nothing like I've seen on whites... BUT--- waaaaaaay bigger than I've ever seen on a splash before. That is incredible. Looks like he has a lot of fun with his birds. Thanks for sharing that link, Sonoran.

As far as the toes and the pictures, I have several birds that have great separation, and yet don't have the nice V on the 4th and 5th. Other than that, nice toes. Right now, I know who I'm keeping toe wise--- and now need to narrow it further down with type and wings in a couple more months. But so far, I'm happy with how everyone is turning out.

Sonoran-- do you line breed? Or what kind of a system do you use? I was reading an article by Kenny Troiano in the Poultry Press about the benefits of line breeding. But stuff I'd read online showed some horrible reprecussions of it-- like twisted spines, etc. But he talks about "foundation birds". But I don't really know enough to form an opinion either way.

Quote: Not really. I bring in new blood occasionally, and place birds together that seem to make good sets. No real system. I'm not good at that kind of organization and record keeping. There was a recent discussion on the ASBC yahoo group on line breeding or alternative breeding styles. I largely agree with Alan's posts.

Wow, that little, perfecty round splash hen is soooo awesome!! That's why I thought my pullets chest was wimpy. :)
