Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

I would say sure to the sesame seeds - chickens eat seeds. Not so sure on the poppy seeds.. don't they contain a narcotic? I don't know if chickens would eat seeds from a poppy.. I have California Poppies over here so I guess I will check when the seed pods pop. They are a lot smaller than most seeds I see the chickens eat.

I have heard of chickens eating people's poppy plants, but no responses as to if they are bad for them or if they get "hooked".

and we have veining people! Not one of nori's eggs, but still! It's the little one my friend gave me from her black roo and white hen! I will need a black hen for my project anyway so fingers crossed a little pullet hatches! The other 3 older eggs in the bator don't look as good now that I see one that is viable

The oldest one, 12 days, has some darker matter floating around the yolk but no veining, more like it's bad, and it doesn't really look like chick. Should I throw it out? I don't want it to explode and contaminate the others. The one with veining is on day 4, the other ones are days 5 and 6. Neither of them has any veining and she had been away from my roo for almost 3 weeks so I didn't really expect them to be fertile.

Why is it that when you have a roo issue that no one is selling a color you want?! My Black roo is not doing his job... The girls will be going with our darkest Blue roo for a while but I need another roo.

I am glad you have veining so you can see what its supposed to look like. Its hard to describe, seeing is best.

How is Nori doing?

Wait on the ones that are on day 5 and 6, sometimes its harder to see or they are late starters. I would take out the day 12 one thought - it should show definite veins by now! Check the other two at day 10 - if nothing by then you can probably remove them - 3 weeks is the outer end of viability and they may be infertile.

Too bad it wasn't one of Nori's eggs, the fertile one.
I would imagine you should be able to see something by day 12. Last year, I was able to see a clear difference in my eggs by that time. And mind you, I had no idea what I was looking at.

That was my first time candling eggs.
I would throw the infertile egg away.

Hi there. Beautiful coloring on the Partridge birds. Its my favorite color

I believe splash is a recognized color in Silkies.

Are you SURE Gala is a girl? That's a very large comb for a girl. And s/he has a lot of hard tail feathers..that tail is more like a roosters tail. Has she laid an egg?

All of your birds may be too young to determine quality. None of the Partridges have full crests. Salvador has very large wattles and appears to have no feathers on the middle toes. Their tails aren't very full. Hopefully they will get better as they grow older.

The young Splash boy actually has the best "poofieness" of them all.

I don't know what your breeding goals are, but if one bird offsets the faults in another bird then breed them together. If they both have the same fault - it wont likely get better (but you never know). The splash boy would be best kept in a black/blue/splash breeding pen - if you mix him with Partridge you will only get a mess that will take generations to get back to an accepted color again.

I just realized.. Salvador might be the hen and Gala the rooster? Gala's coloring also says "rooster".. the hens are usually more even colored all over - not with that bright gold collar.
