Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Any white unscented non clumping kitty litter will do. You can buy big bags from Auto supply places. They use it to absorb oil. You really can't keep Silkies in top show condition when they live on the ground.

I would try soaked BOSS, and some corn oil on the feed for that frizzle.BOSS is great for Silkies too, and they love it. NO corn oil though, or their beards will be a mess !

Thanks, I will get some and give it a try. I gather it wasn't too dusty? The way my Betty White digs and kicks I'm afraid she'd have lung problems in no time. I don't have my show birds outside, no way. Right now I am using tubs, like rubbermaid, to keep them in as I don't have many birds. I do let them out to free range for a couple of hours on dry days.

I used Keipper Jap coops . They are 2x2' and come 2 to a section. They are taller than bantam coops, so you don't have to worry about the crests. Food and water AlWAYS in the same kidney cups, and pop bottle, with plastic cups, waters. at home , or at shows.Makes a difference.

I wonder how the corn cob stuff would do. You could even scoop it like cat litter and I don't think it would get very soggy. Just a thought.

Quote: The feed cups I like are actually utensil holders from Ikea. I like that they are relatively inexpensive, hold a lot and I can leave an inch or so of space at the top, which means that less feed gets wasted/pushed out of the top. They are about 5 or 6" tall, and about 3.5"x 4" oval opening. Unfortunately they have drain holes in the bottom, so are no good for holding water. Of course, crests would EASILY be soaked if they did...

I found much less wear on the crests from a wider, shallower cup. Whatever works !

I didn't know what a kidney cup is either...still not sure how it would be beneficial. Not getting the ikea cups either! Maybe the pics will help. And is there any way that one can have success feeding silkies FF?? Yeah, didn't think so. lol
