Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

You need to keep a few non vaulted skull birds in your flock. If you don't, the crest feathers will eventually get shorter, and more sparse.

Hmmm....why is that? Doesn't make sense to me. Please enlighten me;-)
AND just got back from a show and brought my sexy new silkie cock home. He is so gorgeous....will post some pics later.
 
Jack is getting healthier! Feet are completely healed and his feathers are slowly growing back. Any potential in him? I think he may look really nice once he's back to top form but I haven't been doing this long so I would love to hear the opinions of the silkie "veterans"

Okay I couldn't resist posting this guy....my first love is the whites and this guy blew me away. His name is Streak and it took me a couple of months of begging Donna to get him. He is two years old and yes, he's hot and panting. Will get better pics when it isn't 200 degrees.
