Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

I'm not sure what the grey silkie diluting gene is. I think it's lavender so really you don't want to do a lavender and blue dilute breeding I think. If you do you would get:

E Lav
E. EE. Elav
Bl. EBl. Bl lav

So 25% black, 25% blue, 25% lavender, and some kind of crazy over diluted something in last 25%.

Might be worth doing just to see what a bue lavender mix looks like. Maybe.

Anyways, I don't think I was much help but that's my two cents?

Breeding Lavender into your BBS colors is pointless, as it wont show well, except in the feather structure. Just muddies the water. If you are going to start mixing genes, have a plan in mind of what you are trying to accomplish, and what your goal for doing so is.

Ok, so what would you get breeding a black silkie to a red silkie?
I'm confused why you would want to do that? Are you wanting more red silkies or more Black silkies? If you are wanting more red silkies, I would breed back to a bird that is deep Buff. I think I go about doing things differently than a lot of people new to chicken colors do. If I have a color in mind, I don't look to see what colors I have in my flock and cross my fingers and go for it. I first research and decide what color I'm aiming for, then decide on a plan of how to go about it, I'll probably talk to a few people who are currently working with that color and see what has worked for them and try not to make their mistakes, and then finally, will locate a bird or two that has the desired genetics behind it to create the color I'm after. I'm really more of a straight-forward let's keep things clean kind of breeder. I breed with a purpose and plan. Always. Chicken genetics aren't like oil paints-- you can't just take two colors and hope they will "blend". Anyway, the deep red color is something that a few people have worked with in the past. It is not a Standard or accepted color, however, if you are wanting to acheive that color, Bobbi Porto in Florida has already created it on accident several years ago. She has since then sold offpsring and others have been able to get a few deep red colors as well. I do believe it all started with a dark Buff with a lot of smutt. It might be wise to email her and ask her what the genetics are behind her reds and how to acheive it on your own. I don't know how well the color is being kept going, since I'm not certain it is breeding true. That makes it a lot harder to maintain in going forward with your generations; just be very selective and cull with purpose always keeping in mind what your goal is.

I'm more interested in the genes and how they interact together at this point. I'm not going to actually breed armed and black but wasn't sure what would happen if the two base colors were bred together since they are both dominant. Which is more dominant type of thing. In breeding I'm just starting out and will stick with blue.

How do you guys get those silkie colors do you mix with other breeds to get them

So either find someone who has the color in silkies already or you take the appropriate base color in silkie and do an out breed and then breed back into the silkie line to get type back while working to keep the color you wanted. All that aren't the color or type you want will have to be culled or pet chicken homed.

I have white, black, blue, and buff silkied and Mille fleur silkies soon I hope!!
