Okay, wing pictures! I have been worried about these two-- but I think now that I compare them, the one bird is fine and other other is not.

1st Bird. 1 year old bird.

Also-- I took another shot later because he sort of held his wing out himself when I pulled on it, and it looked better when he was trying to hold it for me:

On the second bird-- those feathers are growing in two different directions.

Yeah, that second one definitely looks bad. The first one looks like its got feathers growing in. Hope you get some expert opinions!

Reminds me of angel wing with my geese

Checked my breeding 4 and none have it. I'll have to check the babies.

It does look like angel wing, but only geese and ducks get that from too much protein while they are growing, right? Never heard of it on a chicken. But it is an odd thing going on in her wings.

Okay--- so split wing, is that identified by the primaries and secondaries growing in two different directions... or by a more literal split in the wing with missing feathers??? What exactly is the deal? BTW-- this bird that has this wing issue is also the same one that has the possible wry tail/ curved spine. It looks like this bird has so many strikes against it. I'm sure I can find her a nice home who will just want a pet for eggs, but figure I better watch and document her grow so I can learn from her.

There is no way to prevent split wing like geese? Thinking out in the open here.. I taped my girl and she is 100% perfect now.

It looks like split wing to me. I had two silkies with angel wing. I kept two babies in the house with the light on all the time for 8 wks and suddenly realized their wings had gotten huge and were folding wrong because of the extra weight. Obviously caused by eating day and night. I had babies the same age out side that were half their size. Same parents too.

Peepers and Sweety left for their new home yesterday, now I'm down to two silkies: Gabby and Picaso. I took some photos today and would like some opinions on Gabby. I'm hoping to show her this fall, she's three months old. I had no help, so wasn't able to get pictures of her wings, but they are both fine. I managed one side but it came out fuzzy...lol

She's a very pretty girl! She could use more middle toe feathering but it's not terrible. She has a lot of hard feathers in her tail and wings could be tighter. She is really very young to be evaluating though.

Are silkies soposed to have beards and I recently bought 11 splash and 4 blue silkies from a hatchery so can I show them and do they need papers?

You will love having silkies! They come in bearded and non-bearded. Unfortunately, hatchery silkies are almost never show quality.

get them from a chicken swap! They have many nice ones from local breeders.

These are my 3 silkies that I have : all are 6 months old. I am curious what your observations are on them!! I know they aren't great photos, but it was pouring rain and all of the chickens were riled up and restless in the coop! Thanks!
