Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Pics
oh and after the discussion about 'weight' and size...I picked up my silkies each and my other splash girl feels HUGE and heavy...I am sure she does not fit the size and weight for a silkie...interesting...

I am going to my first show with one silkie (blue splash) and wanted to know if I can take either of these girls below, to the show...they are paints but one has very orange frosting and the other has a few light spots...even though I think their 'type' s good their coloring is NOT what you think of as paint...

is it worth taking them or not to show as AVO paint?

These aren't paints....

This is Paint:

Paints are a dominant white (I believe based on silver), with BLACK spots. Just like a paint horse. (I loooove paint horses)

The last I read the white birds have "holes" in their pigment that allow the black spots to come through. The black colored feathers go all the way down the shaft of the feather. (they are not black tipped) There should be no gold or buff in paints. I'm drawing a blank on what I've heard your color called. I hope someone will know!

--ETA, but I did want to say-- AMAZING looking silkies you have there!! Definitely show those birds! :) Beautiful!

Paints don't breed true, so just because they came from a paint breeding, doesn't mean that they are a paint. They will throw a lot of other colors. AOV is "All Other Varieties". Paint X Paint will not throw paint, that I'm aware of. I do believe you must breed Paint X Black (pure black!) to get a Paint. And even then, who knows what colors you might come up with in that breeding.

yes i have read that paints do not breed true...and I have a black roo that came from paints (split to paint)...the whiter girl does have a spot between her shoulder blades but thats about it...

does anyone know though can I show those girls as an AVO? because they are not even a 'variety'...even though they are not paint or anything else? I have never shown before and wanted to make the trip worth while and not just take one bird....

It's "AOV" (all OTHER varieties)

But yes, you can take them. Do you already have your registration form? It should have a section on there for AOV, and if it doesn't, call the number of the superintendent who is running that show and ask them about adding your AOV's. They might just tell you to write a note on your registration when you mail it in. Be sure to check and see if they require an NPIP number or if they need the 90 day certificate. All shows are different. Some will allow the NPIP number to show with and others require a 90 day certificate no matter if you are NPIP. The last two shows I went to would not let you show on an NPIP, but must have the more current certificate. But there is a very large show this Fall here coming up, and they are allowing us to submit NPIP numbers. If you are going to go, I would bring at least 3-5 birds to start with. Then after that, you can bring more when you get the hang of it and feel more comfortable.

okay I someone posted on here for me what the weight of silkies should be but I can't find it ANYWHERE! I just had my pullet weighed, she is 1 lb 12 oz or 1.8 lbs. is she too large? I hope not =( I am really hoping to show her in a couple months.

The APA accepted weights for silkies are: 36 oz cocks, 32 oz hens and cockerels, 28 oz for pullets. So, your pullet is 28 oz. (or 28.8 oz depending on whether you're going by the pounds you stated or the ounces). Either way, she is not too heavy at all. :)

I should have asked how old she is: if she's 4 months old then she's larger for her age. If she's 8 months old then she's perfect! LOL

6 months about, right in between

but she hasn't grown for at least a month, so I don't think she will grow any larger. I am so relieved that she is a perfect weight! I wasn't sure because she is so solid and my other one is so... scrawny

I swear the other one is only a pound, maybe less. She is a little younger but she is not as solid as my girl I will be showing. Doesn't matter though, that one has split wing. Bummer because she's quite pretty.
