Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

remember the barn is more important then the color you paint it
Yeah, but the one that beat out my splash for 3rd had wings that splayed out to the side, the primaries stuck out over the secondaries. So I was confused. I was going to ask him his reasoning to get a better feel of what I will need to do to perfect, but he disappeared as soon as the awards were announced...

Haha yeah a bunch of them looked TERRIBLE! and so many were super dirty, white birds with yellow all over and greasy looking crests, and birds with poo all over their bums! I thought mine were dirty with a tiny spot of poop residue near their vents, there were birds who placed high with what looked like a diarhea diaper on! I don't know, I guess I was so anal about making my birds look perfect I was a bit shocked when I got there and so many looked just disgusting.

I would have bought a few that were there, even though they weren't the color I need they were just so cute! and some were very typie!

one woman had a white pullet and a white "cockerel", but I told her I think the "cockerel" is a girl, they were 4-5 months and it didn't even have a comb, she said it was more raised than the other one and showed me, but it looked like my pullets combs so I just said okay and walked away lol.

Quote: Don't fault yourself for doing it right; fault the other exhibitors for NOT doing it correctly, and the judge for not taking all of that into account. I do tend to find that at fairs the birds are all too frequently NOT CLEAN. I wish that that would make it into the rules. Not that birds need to be bathed, but that they need to be CLEAN at the time of coop in, and that significantly dirty birds will not be handled or judged. Some birds are kept in pristine enough conditions that they really do not need a bath before every show (especially if shows are back to back weekends).

Well also, there was a polish that the judge wrote 'mites' on the coop card, and the owner, whoever it was, left the bird in the coop! with all the other polish around it! luckily he was on the oposite end of the barn. The judge that judged my splash did tell my friend that birds with wet crests don't do well and he did give her 5th place which was last of the splash pullets, but he didn't seem to care about all the poop and crud and gross yellow headed bonnet crested pullets, he gave the worst one BB. I don't know I guess I was expecting better. All birds were supposed to be in their coops by 9am, but one guy was still cooping his birds at 10 and so were many others. Oh well, better luck next time!

I hope you and everyone else takes Permethrin dust to ALL shows, especially fairs, and dusts your birds BEFORE putting them back in their travelling boxes. If not, you are asking for BIG trouble.
