Silkie breeding, genetics & showing

Haha yeah a bunch of them looked TERRIBLE! and so many were super dirty, white birds with yellow all over and greasy looking crests, and birds with poo all over their bums! I thought mine were dirty with a tiny spot of poop residue near their vents, there were birds who placed high with what looked like a diarhea diaper on! I don't know, I guess I was so anal about making my birds look perfect I was a bit shocked when I got there and so many looked just disgusting.
That is how many of them looked when I went to my first show. I went through alot of trouble to make sure that mine were pristine. You should have seen what was there, I would have been embarassed to show up with some of the birds that were there. They were just plain gross and if I had been a judge, I wouldn't have handle such birds. Like DragonLady says, dust the birds before you crate em'. After seeing some of those birds, I'm glad that I brought it.

There were 38 silkies at our show this fall - and everyone was in tip top condition. I would be annoyed if someone brought in dirty birds like that.

Some people brought some really bad molting chickens. One Chantecler could have won the molting contest ;) I couldn't believe there was that bad of a molting chicken there :p

I think the only other breed that even came close were the old english game bantams.

It was really neat to see them all. No showgirls though. I've never seen one in person yet

wow we had more showgirls then silkies last year how far are you from michigan well have take some over the border next time my dog gose back to breeder

Sudden changes (like being taken to a show) can bring on molting.  Bird might have been fine until it was moved.
No - I know this guy. He doesn't prep for show with his birds. He uses showing as advertisement. Does not care what he brings. At our fair he brought birds that were very rooster damaged.

So he just grabs them the morning of the show and doesn't condition them. Not what I'd do by a long shot :p

Honestly, I looked like the crazy chicken diva because I actually cared how my birds looked and I fussed over them. Actually, I was tickled at the crew that brought in the sebrights, they were pros. You could tell that they were competitors and this wasn't their first rodeo (so to speak). They were a group of retired guys and they took alot of care with their little peeps. They did sooo much grooming and I had a great time watching them!
This show was not really the experience that I had hoped for, I was expecting more, and I was disappointed. My husband was very excited and was totally supportive, but after a couple of hours, I was cold, wet, and bored. When I got home that night, I had to confess that I didn't have very much fun. There were people there to show for fun and then there were those that were showing and selling birds for the money. There were some shifty characters there. I am hoping that the next show will be a better experience.
