is there anyway they could get some form of grit from outside?

I don't feed my chickens grit. The feed mill did tell me though that there was grit already in their chicken feed... I don't know if that's true.

I let mine out every now and then and they seem to be fine. If your birds are free-ranged people tell me they can get enough grit from what they find outside. But since I won't be letting my chickens out a lot the rest of this year because it's so cold I think I might have to go buy a bag of grit...

So yeah, if they are free-ranged they get enough grit on their own.
