Hello!! I’m new here so thanks for the add!

I know silkie chicks are hard to sex, I’m just more curious than anything. I got 4 chicks in hopes of maybe two hens. I have a pair of black silkie chicks about 5 weeks old and a pair of white/black speckled chicks at about 6 weeks old now.

The 4 are docile and behavior wise show both roo and hen behavior. I think my whites are likely hens based on their behavior but honestly no clue. I do think I have at least one roo in the black pair. He’s bigger than the other and behavior wise a little more aggressive. Just wanted to post some pics and see what y’all think!!

My first pic is the pair of black chicks I have (Bella and Jessica). The second and the is the one I think is a roo (Bella) and the fourth and fifth I think is a hen (Jessica). The whites are a complete toss up!

Any info is awesome, just wanted to see what others thought :)

5 things:
1. Do the black ones have the same size comb? I would watch for wattles.
2. I think the first white one is cockerel because of wattle development.
3. Does the second white silkie have silkied feathers?
4. It is way too early. Update in a few weeks, Silkies are notebly hard to sex.

1. The larger black one (so the first one posted) has a larger comb. Wouldn’t say by too much but enough that it’s certainly noticeable!
3. The second one does on the head/neck and feet/butt areas. I was told its a showgirl silkie breed
4. For sure! I know it’s way too early but you noticed the comb on my first white chick which I would’ve never caught. Thanks!! It’s fun to guess and look back!

Do you see the difference? If you dont, go back and look at your (amazing) picture. Compare the 2 white silkies. The first has a comb and wattles and the second has none. Check the black silkies for wattles. That is usually a tell tell sign.

The difference in the white silkies? I do see the wattles for sure now and I see not wattles on my black ones but the comb on the larger black one is def bigger than my other! I know too early to tell but I have a roo now that’s a bit of an ahole so wanted to maybe have an inkling 😂

You know their behavior, and that is a true factor. Go with your gut! He has no true physical signs, but if he has an attitude, he is probably a roo.

Apologies for the delay in response. Off the forum for the past month (work getting in the way of free time). Agree, way too early to tell. The one white one is not a Silkie. Definitely a Silkie mix and possible a Satin. This one will be easier to tell gender as a rule. I recommend reposting photos around minimum 12 weeks of age. 😊
