If I have a mixed hatch with my larger breed, I always separate them in different brooders because of the silkies fragile skull. I don't want them trampled and have a head injury.

Thanks for those pictures. That will come in very handy. When is the best time to check the wing feathers ? 2, 3, 4 days old?

I think they usually feather sex them at 1 day old ~ so the earlier the better. It may not work if they are much older.

Sorry if this is a "no brainer" I'm a chicken idiot!

If you had separate coops could you free range Silkies and standard size birds on like a half an acre or would they need to be completely separated at all times? I'm thinking if I get some silkies down the road I may have to have them in a tractor or something.
