Edited to add my silkie's story.

On March 13, I walked into TSC. Just for dog food, mind you. As I walked in, I was not looking around, I was bee-lining to the dog food. As I walked in the door, I was struck by the chirping sound. Since we live in FL, birds in buildings is not surprising, so without looking around, I think to myself "boy, there sure are a lot of birds here today". Well, this lady walks by, and the chirping is louder. Then gets softer. Odd, I think to myself. Then this little boy walks by, and the chirping gets louder again. Now, my attention is caught. Those are some odd birds!!! So, I do one of those - look at the boy, but not be obvious, don't want the parents to think I'm a stalker, to see what's up - looks, and he is carrying a box. "A box?!" I say to myself. Hmmmm, so I finally look around. There, in the center of the store, is 4 huge bins, and the chirping is coming from there. "I will not look in" I command myself, as my feet carry me over to the center, completely of their own accord. Against my better judgement, I look in. And see nothing! Whew! So, I go to the next bin. A big sign covering the top says "SOLD". Whew, again! Then, the 3rd, baby ducks!!!!! AAAAWWWWEEEE!!! They are sooooo cute!! But my outdoor dog is a hunting breed (never took her hunting) but I know ducks and her wouldn't mix. So, off to bin 4. Chicks!!!! OH, so cute!!! No one was by the bins at the time, so I just have to give them some love!!! I reach in, and they run to the other side. Meanwhile, I am talking myself out of getting some.
Self - I don't have space.
Me - but they are so cute!
Self - they will cost a fortune.
Me - but I can get eggs.
Self - my DH will KILL me.
Me - but he will get over it, and I can use them as Easter gifts (well, that's what I'll tell the kids
lol.png
)
Self - where will you put them.
Me- I have that empty fish tank, for now.
Self - are you nuts? You have enough animals!
Me - but they are just chicks, how much space do they really need?

So, after much debate, I decide not to buy any. Just to give some love. Until......................... the smallest one in the brooder hops on my hand and falls asleep. SOLD!!!

I drill the poor man at TSC about care/needs/etc, and box up 3 unique, cute, and active babies. Food, bedding, waterer, food dish - all cost $12! (see, Self, you were wrong, it wasn't a fortune!!!HA!)

Get them home, fall head over heals in love, eventually have to let the kids play with them (drats) and realize my 1 fatal mistake.......

I didn't get one for myself!!!!

So I google raising baby chicks, and BINGO - BYC is my new best friend!!! I read about all the great breeds, and decide that I must, must, must have a silkie for MY chick. So, after "the kids" chicks get a bit older, I partake upon MissPriss's homemade bator. Fullfills the $ quota (only cost me $13). Then, gulp, I order 12 eggs from bugladyleah. $15 including shipping, for some silkies and some frizzles. I lovingly place them in the bator, and ooogle the thing hundreds of times a day. Drool and all!!! And on day 19, a pip!!! Then, within 30 hours, I have 5 new silkies, and 5 new frizzles!!!

All for me! Me alone! No one else! Mine!!!! (oh, sorry, off track there)

And, now they are 2 weeks old, and the love just grows. Oh, my kids have named some, and try to "claim" them, but in the end, they know that those are "MINE!" and my chicks know it, just let me walk by without talking to them, and man they pitch a fit!!!!

So, that is my silkie story. Not really about an individual silkie, but my desire to own one of the cutest (in my opinion) chickens that ever existed!

This is my rooster Smudge. I hatched him in an incubator I built myself. Out of the dozen eggs I recived 6 hatched and 4 were roosters. He is my favorite out of the bunch.

He is a blue about 7 months old.

Head shot

This was the first silkie to hatch. I watched as he hatched, then tried to stand. Immediately I noticed a huge "bump" on his head. I thought something was terribly wrong with him!!! (I have never had a silkie before mind you) Then, I remembered something I had read on the forum, but didn't really know what it meant at the time, "vaulted skull" OHHHH, now it made sence!!!!! *sigh of relief* LOL
As soon as my DD saw him, she says "OMG, you HAVE to name him Kramer!!!! (I don't know if he is a boy, but that is his name for now. I originally called it Daisy, cause I wanted it to be a girl!)

So thats his story. He came from eggs shipped from Danrut101 (I highly recommend!)

Minutes after he hatched:
