5 month old Silkie has a little bit of an eye problem. First started off with one eye swollen and appeared piece of corn was under the edge of the lid. Removed corn and washed eye with warm water. Checked next day still swollen and crusty. Next day BOTH eyes swollen shut. She appeared to have small/tiny white bugs around her eye. I only saw two but was going into the lid. What is this? is it infection from debris in eye? or another problem? She also appears to be crawling with tan/reddish/orange bugs.

How should I treat for eye and bugs?

Having the same problem with one of our white silkies. Treating with water soluble Terramycin powder in drinking water and gently washing with warm water washes every few hours. Had to gently pull the eyelids apart but she is doing better and able to keep the one eye open and we are still working on the other eye. Being blind, you will have to help it drink at least. Also been using an over the counter people eye wash like artificial tears. Helps with the irratation. As for the bugs. You can dust with Seven dust which will take care of them. All our chickens get them from time to time and we just dust and they go away. You can dust the birds directly or dump a bit in the areas where they like to take dust baths.

Tan/reddish bugs are probably mites.... for instant treatment giver her a bath with flea & tick puppy formula shampoo, and allow her to dry in a warm area. You can also treat with Ivomec, or carbaryl powder, however these are instant gratification treatments.

:| so I wonder if it's the bugs that's irritating the eye or if an infection... going to a hatchery to hopefully get some meds

I think it's called Terramycin ointment. Do a google search and you'll find a lot of info on it.

The piece of corn could have scratched the cornea a bit.

Searched Terramycin and it does not specify use on poultry. Has other people used this. No adverse effects on chickens?
