Crowing
I know the feeling! It's taken me 1 1/2 years to get 5 hens from silkie chicks. I have the worst luck.

I should have known I wouldn't get lucky enough to get a cockerel and a pullet with my first 2 silkies ever.I know the feeling! It's taken me 1 1/2 years to get 5 hens from silkie chicks. I have the worst luck.
I can. I just worry about them fighting. I had an extremely aggressive RIR roo who killed my BO cockerel. He went to freezer camp, but it definitely made me paranoid about having more than 1 roo/cockerelCan you keep your cockerels? Silkie cockerels are the sweetest.
My huge pet quality silkie roo from TSC, Magnus, is the alpha and he is pretty mild mannered. My other roos are bantams and they pretty much accept him as being in charge. Magnus will run over if my Polish mounts one of the hens, but he doesn't attack or chase him away. My Polish will sometimes chase the other roos, but I have never seen him attack, and he never messes with Magnus haha. I never see the other boys attempt to breed the hens. They stay on the margins. I think Magnus is really pretty and his movement is regal and proud! Can you keep your cockerels? Silkie cockerels are the sweetest.
I had a very aggressive wyandotte that met the same fate. He was beautiful and I kept him as long as I could. I was afraid of losing an eye! My hen to roo ratio is way off in this flock, so I don't know if it will work long term, especially in winter because the birds spend most of their time inside. I think that it helps that the ladies are large fowl, the roos are a bantam except for Magnus, and the little wyandotte and cochin roos are very subordinate, and they free range during the day. I have another flock that is fenced and it has 8 hens and "Tiny" my little Japanese roo. He is the fiesty roo-aggressive one and he is the second smallest bird in my flock, so he gets his own harem.I can. I just worry about them fighting. Well if they are both cockerels that just means I have to get more silkies in the spring. HahahaI think the first one in the picture might be a pulletI don't see any waddles yet
but I'm honestly not sure!
I'm the same way with our new chicks! I'm always thinking they are one gender and then positive they are the other
