Silkie Hatch-A-Long

Well last years chixks decided to present me with 3 eggs today that I found before they froze. So what did I do...warmed them up and threw them in bator. Have to check and make sure the roos are doing their job right? I really think I have a hatching problem. Lol

hey, inquiring minds need to know right?

aw cute chicks!!

Well just went and candled some eggs.
Broody #1 had 8 eggs and 2 were definitely duds that I took out. 3 looked good and 3 were iffy so I put those 6 back
Broody #2 had 6 eggs. 4 looked good and 2 looked like they were quitters so I put them back and check again in a few days
Broody #3 has 6 eggs that I will candle friday
and I just put 5 eggs under broody #4 today but 1 egg is over 2 weeks old so I'm not hopeful.

But it does make me happy that all eggs did at least start developing so my roosters are doing their jobs. Too bad when I went down there tonight they had obviously gotten in a fight so now both of them are inside in dog kennels until i can figure out something better in the daylight
hey congrats!!! hoping you get some nice little fuzzy babies!!!

My chicks are a week old now! I love watching the feathers begin to grow! Some are already turning out on my sizzles!

Some have a bigger head that others and the two silkies have a white toe... is that a cochin trait left over?

Anyway, I love them and wanted to share!

A smooth sizzle chick (I think) with a white toe? What's that mean?

A grey sizzle chick feathers already turning out... This is the one I had to put a neck brace on for a couple of days... now it is perfect!

adorable pictures! What did you breed to get sizzles? I think they are so cool but never understood the breeding behind it

I'm new at this so I may not get it totally correct... I ordered my eggs off Ebay. A frizzled bird can be of any breed... that's where you get the feathers that turn out.
You breed a silkie with a frizzled cochin and then continue selective breeding until you get the traits of a silkie with the frizzled feathers (a sizzle).
You can not breed a sizzle with a sizzle because they have feathers that break and the chicken is in pain.
So, I need a few more sizzles to breed with silkies. I am wanting to have a few more colors of sizzles so that's what I am after.
Lots of people have "sizzle projects" trying to get show quality with certain displayed genetic traits... mine are just for pets. Hope that makes a little sense.
