Silkie Holiday Hatch-a-long

no babies yet, but its only day 21 our last chick hatched on day 23. I actually heard some lady who had her chicks hatch on day 28.

Oh don't say that. That makes me think of all my 24 and 25 day old egg that got tossed in the trash

I'll be putting my Silkie eggs in the bator tonight! Unless my girls don't lay today, I would like a few more eggies. I always try to set my eggs at night, so they hatch during the night and I'm not tempted to mess with them or spending hours with my nose pressed to the incubator glass

HI, quick question, in the hatching 101 article it states to put the vent plugs in until day 10 to increase CO2 and remove at day 10. saying that this will stress them and force them to grow stronger... has anyone done this? and if so what results? I am hesitant to try this, but want to do what's best... thanks!

We used the Farm Innovator 4400 with 2 red vent plugs. We kept humidity at about 25-30% and kept the red vent plugs in until day 18. Will get you the forum we went to for advice. We started with 9 eggs, 2 duds, of the 7 3 hatched, 1 got stuck and I didn't help it in time, and 3 were late deaths. I'll get the forum for you.

A guide to humidity weighing and lockdown.

This guy, Pete, I think, has a very informative forum started here. He recommends weighing the eggs and managing the air sack. We didn't do this, we probably should have. Regardless, we had substantially different air sacks at day 18 with candling, so it was almost like, we could maintain those getting ready to hatch knowing that we could possibly be drowning those that were too slow to hatch. If we had 2 incubators we may have had more success, we were not expecting to have 1/2 the eggs ready to hatch and 1/2 the eggs not ready. I think it's because some eggs were much older than the others. The older eggs didn't make it past day 23. In retrospect, the one chick that got stuck, I should have intervened. We tried to hatch in a Styrofoam egg carton to maintain the air sacks in an upward position and the silkie egg shells were thick and got stuck onto the Styrofoam with the increase in humidity. If we hatch again, I would just set the silkie eggs onto the grate in the incubator, no egg carton. There shells are very thick. The sizzles eggs were more porous and they hatched better in the egg carton. Overall we got 2 sizzles, and 1 late shell death, 1 silkie, 1 stuck in shell-died, 1 failed to progress-late death day 22, and 1 sultan that was also a late death (10 day old egg) day 23.

Happy hatching!

Well I candeled today. 11 out of 31 show veining. 1 had a definate blood ring so tossed. Its only day 6 so I will leave all in and candle again on day 10. Seeing as they are shipped and were shipped during very cold I'm not suprised. I'm happy at least some show development. And some are paint so really excited. :)
