Silkie is yawning non stop, help!

She did a swipe of her mouth and crop, nothing abnormal. She hasn’t pooped so she couldn’t check for tapeworms. She wanted $150 for X-rays and then more diagnostics, I really didn’t like the vibe I was getting at all. I have a friend that lives nearby that’s had chickens for years, She said it looks like Possibly Gape worm and I’ve never worked them so giving it a shot.
She also said there’s gas in her crop. She recommended flubenvet 2.5 for worms
Did she give you the Flubenvet?

@casportpony is the worming guru - she can correct me or give you better instructions than I can, but if you don't have the worming medication yet, you may want to use Safeguard at .23ml per pound for 5 days in a row or Valbazen at 1/2ml for 3 days in a row if you think she has Gapeworm. It's fairly rare in chickens and I would expect her to be coughing and showing more signs of respiratory distress. Both of these wormers will take care of most worms if given correctly. It's a shame she didn't poop so you could get a fecal float. If she has tapes, then Praziquantel might be better.

IF the crop is gassy, then this could definitely be the cause of her yawning/opening the mouth. I would make sure she has water, but would probably withhold feed for the rest of the day on work on the crop. Give her a good crop massage 3-4times a day, see if you can feel anything in there, even something as small as a marble can sometimes be a problem. I would start out by giving 1 teaspoon of coconut oil (I refrigerate it and they will eat little chunks), give her a massage, she may actually burp some. I had one hen that was airy in the crop, but she had an underlying condition, but I worked on her for about a week and got it cleared. She lived a few more months until she succumbed to internal laying. Anyway...here's a very good article on crops you may want to read

Thank you for the info!! She told me to get it from TSC but instead I went to a farm supply store and picked up Valbazen. I also tried to get her to eat a lil scrambled egg, yogurt and a few grains because she’s just so skinny. She went nuts and when she tilted her head over to eat water cane pouring out which I’ve heard is common with gape worm. Will Vabazen mill gape worm?

Valbazen will treat gapes if you give 0.08 ml per pound of body weight orally three days in a row. How much did she weigh at the vet office? Her weight should be listed on the paper work you left with.

This shows how to give oral medication.

Edited to fix dosing error/typo.

Her paperwork says 1.28 kg which would be almost 3 pounds. So 1/4 ml 3x a day for how long? Should I treat the rest of my flock even if I haven’t confirmed it’s gapes? I did just finally see her poop it was runny, I didn’t see anything moving around in it...I also looked through the other solid poops in the coop and didn’t see anything work like.

Ooop, my bad, so sorry, I made a serious mistake in my last post! I should have said "0.08 ml per pound three *days* in a row". I will go back and edit that serious typo.

That poop is not normal. I think worming her is a good idea. Did the vet suggest starting her on antibiotics?

I know. My poor chicken. She didn’t. I wasn’t impressed, however she was the only option. My regular vet doesn’t treat chickens but she is amazing with my dogs, I’m wondering if I should drop this poop off to her to test and maybe she can give me antibiotics?

Update....her crop feels large and mushy...foul smelling liquid poured out of her mouth..can this also be from worms??
It sounds like she has Sour Crop. Crop issues can often be a symptom of an underlying condition like worms, coccidiosis, infection and laying disorders. So, yes, worms could be a contributing factor.
Worming her is a good idea. You will likely still need to treat the crop as well if it has become sour, hopefully it will start clearing well if worms are the main cause and the crop will be easy to treat.
