OK, for those of you who are curious my producer made a video
of me slaughtering and plucking a silkie. It has been made in a
comical way. IT IS GRAPHIC!!!

IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE DON'T WATCH IT. IF YOU HAVE NO SENSE
OF HUMOR DON'T WATCH IT. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS DON'T
WATCH IT!!! I DO NOT WANT THE MODERATORS TO BE BOTHERED
FOR MY THREAD. THIS IS IN THE MEAT BIRD SECTION AND CONFORMS
TO BYC RULES.

THIS IS YOUR FINAL WARNING.

I was wondering how hot that water has to be to get those feathers out like they did?

Seems like you didn't have the bird in there for too long and the feathers really came out, rather well.

This is coming from someone who has not processed a silkie or any other critter for that matter.

Things that make you go...hmmm....

me,
g

Wow! I've never processed anything either. My grandmother used to process and said there's truth to the statement "running around like a chicken with it's head cut off" It looks like she was right about that.

Chickens sort of jump around once you chop the heads off. It's a strange
thing.

Maple, the water was 160 degrees. Silkie feathers come of very easy
compared to standards.

Just for the record, while we appear heartless in the video, we had
slaughtered 25 birds before that and had numbed ourselves up.
Sometimes the laughter and silliness make dealing with the act of
swinging the hatchet easier. It's a wierd thing.

whew. i am surprised at how long it flapped after the head was cut off. i kept expecting it to stop, but it just went on, didn't it!?

a very educational video.

PC, can you post a video showing how to eviscerate a bird?

Actually, watching you do that makes it a lot easier to think about doing it myself.

This is something I would be VERY interested in, as well. I have not been able to find anyone to process birds for me and really want to raise meat birds. I have ALMOST convinced myself I could do it but am terrified I would "ruin" it somehow trying to take the insides out right.
