This is my only silkie. It's about 11 weeks old.

Thank you. I was figuring cockerel. It's always harder when you don't have anything to compare it to though. I have absolutely no experience with silkies. A friend ordered silkie eggs and didn't have enough room in her incubator for all of them. I put the extras in my incubator with some of my eggs. He's the only silkie I ended up with. My friend appears to have hatched all pullets. I think she will be very happy to take him.

I have heard people say that they can sex their own silkies at 6-8 weeks. But if they get it wrong it only effects them. I've been breeding for several years and while you do get the odd one that shows signs of being a roo at an early age, I wouldn't even hazard a guess on other peoples birds till 12-16 weeks. Even then it is only an educated guess. Short of DNA testing , the old saying, ' egg or crow ' is sometimes the only option.

Great post! When I was breeding silkies, I got to where I could tell fairly well around 6 weeks or so. But I was working with the same lines over and over and OVER, hatching dozens of babies a month. I started to recognize my line's characteristics. Not everyone's lines are the same.

I just bought this one(my first silkies), along with one that is for sure a Roo. I thought i was getting two roos which was what i was told. When i brought them home my hubby swore this one was a hen. The other like i said is for sure a roo. They are supposed to be 10 - 12 mos old.
What do you think?
