I would say you have a couple of partridge silkies. And in this picture if you look behind his head(he is crowing now) you can see feathers that are slightly more coarse and longer trailing down from his crest. These are called streamers. Again the are slightly longer and coarser. And only roos get them. Although if a pullet's feathers come in patchily it can make it appear like she has them.

I am new to silkies as well but these have been my observations. I will try to get a more recent pic of the streamers so that you can see them better.

You're welcome. Now if only the rest of mine were as easy as him. We have three whites two of which appear identical and I was looking at them outside today and I was saying to myself ansand mother, "The splash is a pullet(almost positive), the partridge obviously a roo, the buff no one seems sure of(even on here I got one pullet and one roo vote) I think pullet. He/she is the smallest and most submissive holds its tail like a pullet but occasionally stands like a roo. (So who the heck knows and its my favorite.) So there I was staring at the three whites which I usually think on male and two females, wouldn't you know it all three were holding their tails like roos as I watched. I had to just walk away saying I give up. But two are definitely roos very developed combs. The buff has more development than a couple of the ones I guess are pullets but less than the ones I'm sure are roos.

New plan! If you're a boy hold your right wing in the air. If only it were that easy.

Can yall look at my silkie? Male?female? It's about 12 or 13 weeks old. Only puff ball we have so no one else to compare against. These photos show the crest right after a feast of corn on the cob. It's crest usually is puffy and white.

The last picture was 2 or 3 weeks ago...rest are a few hours old.

Many thanks...never had a silkie before, please could you elaborate on what streamers are? Also, any ideas what their colouring is classed as? Sorry for all the questions. ..

Did you find an answer to your question? Streamers are feathers on the head if males that are thicker, barbed feathers, like the ones on their wings.... They come in in little tube- like structures that look like, well.. Lol lack of better term, little tubes ha-ha

They're the same kind of feather that you would find on the wing tip, and in males, the tail.

And if you look at the possible cockerel, in that pic it looks like a "he" mostly judged by those little spiky tubes that are arching towards his back.

Do let us know lol, its neat to see progression on them, for comparison and education... Silkies are really tricky and that's part of the fun!

Thank you for the info, I'll update pictures as they progress. The possible cockerel is the smaller of the pair and also the most timid. ..I was hoping that the tubes were just pin feathers...maybe not! Really could do without any more males, hopefully the other will be a pullet, they were purchased unsexed so it was always the chance....fingers crossed that at least one is a girly!
