silkie sexing

Yep, that's a good way to describe them. Your best bet if you wanted for sure pullets is to get them from a breeder who is familiar with their line and is able to accurately (80-90 % of the time )sex them from 2-3 months old. Some will still be tricky and I've read stories about breeders hearing a crow from their pullet pens and finding an egg in their cockerel pens LOL

. Getting some from a breeder that breeds to the standards of perfection also usually means that you will get nicer quality birds with decent crests and soft silky feathers. Definitely worth it if you can find someone in your state that breeds silkies. They are super adorable and sweet little things

About 5 months old.

If it hasn't crowed I'm going to guess pullet. It's hard for me to try and sex silkies by pictures alone cause the way I do it here is I compare them with other silkies the same age by comb size and behavior usually. I would think that at 5 months it would have crowed by now or at least have streamers on it's crest. I'm gonna say pullet. Update us if it lays an egg or crows

This is a pullet. If you notice her crest is nice and round.

This is a cockerel (a little bit younger than the above pullet). If you look at his crest it doesn't appear as round as the above pullet and has longer 'hairs' sticking out toward the back. Those are streamers and only silkie males get them.

Hope this is helpful.

I don't know if you can see, but I believe it has those streamers coming out the back of its head. I will try and catch it later and take a better picture. Thanks for the help.

@FarmGyrl Yes I think you may be right... I do notice them in that picture

That comb is really really puffy or swollen... very much like some of my cockerels. I think it's a cute little paint boy!

Thank you! I am hoping that it is a girl :) I didn't know what kind it was. The person that I got it from didn't know all the history and I was wondering if it could possibly been mixed with something creating the black spots. She said it's about 3 months so I guess a few months to tell for sure. Here is a close up of its comb. Thanks again for the info :)
