Could anyone help me? I've rescued this little ball of fluff from somebody who kept a swamp as a coop. After some tlc and a good wash, I was wondering if someone could tell me if this was a silkie and maybe help me sex it. And yes, it is currently in my bathroom lol as we have some harsh cold weather

That looks like a silkie, but I'm not good telling gender. Any idea on age?

I had my 3 silkies in my bathroom yesterday because I was blow drying them. They decided sitting out in the driving snow was a good idea and I got worried because they were so wet and the north wind was cold.

I still say pullet just because of the eggs. . but crowing? Are you sure it's a crow and not an egg song or just squawking at another bird or something?

Yep, sure it was a crow. In fact, she's been crowing for at least two months now. Even back when she was laying eggs.

I've heard of females that will crow but never a hen that crows and has all the feathering. I would put her and a nest in a dog crate and wait it out. That way you would know if you find an egg and no other hen was able to get in. I have one banty that went WAY out of her way to lay her eggs in my silkie coop. Broke my heart when I realized it was her not my group. I have two roo's and 3 pullets from a batch of 14 silkie eggs I hatched. The coloring on yours is beautiful though either way.

I know there was no way it was it was another pullet that laid the egg. Their coop was 40 feet away from any other coop, and I don't free-range my chickens (due to a high hawk population).

I'm starting to think I may have one of those crazy rare cases where a chicken has BOTH sexes. Now I just need to find estrogen supplements for chickens to get her to be predominantly female again..... ;)
 
Very cool. Well keep us up to date. As it is I still have one white silkie that is giving me fits. Pulletish comb and its bearded so no wattles but I swear it developed small streamers. It also stands like a roo... Then again all my silkies seemed to more or less and the only one who seemed to stand like a pullet everyone said was a roo. Well I'm happy to say that almost positively Ginger is in fact we her name not Gilligan. She squats like a champ and my two roos are very interested in her. I'm also almost certain she's laying although I haven't caught her at it. I have ruled out the two other bantams in the group and I'm almost certain that she is the only silkie who could be laying yet.

This is our newest baby! 4wks old. She/he is the only hatchling of our last clutch, but all of our older chickens have adopted her/him. I hope these are clear enough for you to tell what sex she/he is. Thank-you!

It's entirely possible for a dominant hen to crow.
