Silkie Showing Questions

Best choice is to bathe about a week early, then keep their cage/pen scrupulously clean until showtime. Spot clean as necessary. Adding extra grains to their diet is helpful in firming poop; at this time of year be careful to not add too many "hot" grains.

Remember to back comb during the blow dry (with fingers( for additional fluff,...
also, you can use a furminator (GENTLY AND CAREFULLY) to remove feather shafts.

Also, several months before a show pull broken foot feathers.

On white birds, I like to use a laundry stain remover, it helped me this spring with some stains, others are more permanent.

Trim nails BEFORE you bathe, just in case you nick the quick and it bleeds. Look at beak, does it need trimming?

Overall, ENJOY.

Have fun at your show.

I'm on a learning path my self this year . I've never shown poultry ever . I hope to be out there next year . My problem is in the silkies I love all the varities . And the ones I really love the most aren't excepted yet . cuckoo and lavenders are my two favorites . I have blacks to help both projects , thought I could at least show them next year . But someone said it was a waste . If you don't show whites you wont get any where . Is this true ?? Well good luck in september , I wish you the best . Tammy .B

I bought a couple of splash babes 2 weeks ago the breeder told me they were about a month old then . I went to a local basket show that my bird club put on . It's supposed to be a place for beginers and 4hers can learn about showing . It's put on ever year at this time . Anyway I learned a couple of things . Everytime the judge went over a bird and found fault he explained it , to everyone . Now I'm a little confused on 1 thing . My 2 little splashes have white toenails , I was told it wasn't a DQ at a show . But this Judge said it deffinately was . I didn't show my little ones they are way to young but there was one at the show that had a white toe nail . So My question is for all that have shown is it a Dq at a show ? And should I sell these 2 as pets now or is it something that will be easy to breed out in there chicks ? Here's a couple of pics of them and their toenails .
