Silkie Showing Questions

The show is this September. This will be my first time "debuting" my line of silkies. I have shown last fall, just brahmas, and took 3rd place pullet.

Which show are you doing?

Im doing the Eastern New York Poultry Show in Cobleskill NY.

That should be a good show. We aren't planning on that one, but would love to add it to our list. We are at Twin Tiers the week before and Lucasville OH the week after.

I went the 2 years prior and it was a great show. Just started showing last year, but didnt have any silkies to bring. Twin Tiers isnt that in Bath NY, that ones about 5 hours away from us. Too far.

I have a couple of questions. I purchased some SQ silkie eggs and ended up with 3 babies but one of the has one toe that's skon color. Can this just happen? Or are these really probably not quality silkie eggs. The other 2 have the right color but bad toes.

Yeah it's in Bath. It takes us about 5 or 6 hours to get there from Maryland. That is not that bad a drive since we also travel about double that for Lucasville.

Just an FYI you can breed two show champions and get non SQ birds from them. It takes a lot of hatchings to get that one bird that is outstanding. Example: I hatch everything that is laid here to get 6 or 7 great show birds. I have a GQF that holds over 200 eggs. And all the birds have won multiple times at the shows. But I cull heavy for the birds that we keep.

At three fairs this year birds from our flock have taken top honors in 4H as well as open. At the last fair the birds that I sold took Overall Grand and Champ & Reserve Featherleg with over 250 birds shown. And these are the one's that I sold that did not meet MY standard. They were Very nice birds, just not what I was going to keep for my show string. But I did have others from that same hatch that went on to Pet homes. So there is always a chance that the babies my not all be Perfect no matter who the parents are.

I didn't expect show birds that's why I was asking if this is a common flaw. Seems like even the hatchery silkies I've seen have always had the dark skin.
