Let me begin by apologizing to the moderators for any stir this may cause and
to all the non-meat bird eating silkie lovers.

Stop here - do not go any further....

Last Warning...

One of the birds we processed the other day was a Silkie roo. He was
too loud and I was unable to find a home for him. We processed 4 birds
that day, the others were extra standards.

I believe in culling a bird only if you are going to eat it. There was no
way I was going to waste the silkie. As hard as it was, I had to live up to
my own standards or be a hipocrite.

I made a chicken soup based on my own recipe and a few excellent
suggestions, such as precooking the meat, based on this post:

Did it taste any different or did it just taste like chicken? Looks yummy! Ain't nothing wrong with eating a chicken, Silkey or otherwise, in my opinion.

The best chicken I ever ate was a hen that kept attacking me. I loved every bite...

It tasted like a chewy, not gamey, chicken, almost like turkey dark meat.
It was good. My son loved it and he hates everything. He knows "who"
he was eating.

To be honest, it's a little hard for me. I made the soup out of Barred rock
also, which is great. Handling the "silkie factor" is tougher than I expected.

The experience would have been better if I didn't know the bird and
someone else prepared it. Sorry to sound whimpy.

Thanks for your comments.

I really think the dark meat would turn me off. Would have to get used to it...

Is the breast meat dark alll the way through or just the skin??

serendipity22-did it taste like chicken?? I thought everthing tasted like chicken so if it doesn't taste like chicken how would it be described??

Yea, I was being funny. Was wondering if you would come around...

You are a riot!!

It's wierd. The breast meat has a black membrane or something on it.
The skin was gray. The meat itself is a tint darker. I'll take a pic...

It sounds kinda gross... Would have to close my eyes and chew...

It's funny that your son ate it with no problems.

Anything with connective tissue would be dark on the silkie. the reason the skin is so dark and so is the bone is because of the connective tissues. It's a delacy! Good work. Any chicken is chicken to me too.
