One of my silkies has been staying inside the coop. Yesterday afternoon she spent most of the time inside. I thought she may be trying to lay an egg. Another one went in with her and later came out. I checked and removed an egg. This morning she refused to come out again. I removed 2 eggs and brought her out. She ate for awhile and the next time I checked she is back inside. Eventually , I removed 2 more eggs but she would not leave her spot. I took her inside and checked her all over. Could not find anything wrong. Put her back out with the others and she acts fine, but check on her later and she inside again nesting. This time there are no eggs. Is she just being broody? Is this normal behavior? She gets picked on alot and is usually the last chicken to go in the coop.

If she is staying in the nest area and collecting eggs others layer she is probably broody.
Thank you. I'm a first time chicken owner and worry alot. She was my first layer so I'm trying to tell myself that she is probably the first to go broody. They are just about 7 months old and have been laying for 3 weeks.

We
That sounds about right. My silkies have been know to only lay a couple weeks then go broody.
I forgot to ask where you live. I have snow on the ground and my silkies won’t go out in the snow. But my bet is on broody.
We are in Kansas and yes it snowed yesterday. They all wanted out in the snow after it quit falling so I let them out. Most of the snow is gone tonight but it wasn't this morning.

Here is some tips for determining if she is broody and breaking a broody. https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/broody-hen-tips-pictures-on-what-to-do.72137/
I personally don’t hatch eggs from young laying pullets because the eggs are smaller and the chicks aren’t as healthy. I wait till the hens are about a year old and giving me regular size eggs.
I have not had luck breaking a broody silkie, so I usually take her off the nest a couple times a day and put her near the food and water to make sure I watch her eat “usually” after a few weeks of me taking eggs she gives up especially the young ones. My older silkie hens are the ones don’t give up easily. Good luck.

Thank you so much!

A broody chicken will collect eggs from all the other hens, and silkies are known for being broody chickens. Some people buy silkies just because they go broody often. You have nothing to worry about unless you don’t want a bunch of baby chicks in your yard. And sometimes when they hatch you’ll go outside to late and when you do it’s just a bunch of dead chicks. All you have to do to avoid that is put her in her own cage with the eggs, food, and a bowl full of water oh ya and a nest. If you don’t want any chicks just take all the eggs away from her. She will give up trying to hatch the eggs you take away and go back to normal.

Thank you. I have 5 hens and no rooster. I am hoping that if I keep taking the eggs, she will give up. She was the first to lay and is the sweetest. I just worry too much. I'm definitely relieved. Appreciate all the help.
