Silkie thread!

sager:)silkies :

guys my chicken is up and running around and great news just found out that the tissue that was around his nostrils broke and then it bleed which covered his nostrils completely so it was hard to breath and made him weak and his eyes were closed from the goo that came out from his nose when he broke the skin he is fine now but ima keep him inside for couple days to be sure

maybe so, but something caused the mucus, it wasn't tissue it was mucus. its some kind of upper respitory illness. You need to medicate with Tylan, do NOT let it back with the other birds or they can all get it if they don't already.

I agree. If you have access to Tylan or Durramycin, I'd use it, definitely. I am glad to hear he's on the mend, but if you don't take care of the cause with antibiotics, it will likely come back. His immune system is already weakened, and boosting him up with some antibiotics & maybe even some electrolytes will help tremendously. Good luck & I hope he keeps improving.

Weather does not in and of itself cause illness. However, it can foster conditions that make it more likely for clinical level of illness to develop. Weather extremes cause stress, and stress lowers immunity. Lower temperatures can prolong the life of germs that would die under higher temperatures. I do not believe silkies are any more prone to illness than any other breed. A specific LINE may perhaps be, but there are none that I am specifically aware of. Your best bet at preventing illness is keeping your birds immune system built up, making sure they have a dry, well ventilated (but not drafty) coop, clean water, quality food.

In my case I would think it's the extreme weather here in Texas were still having warm days in the 70's even in the 80's just to have it freeze the next day and high 50. I've done everything your suggesting and more. My silkies and all my farm animals get the best feed w there viggies and omega 3s they also free range. Before the little ones got sick everyone was on Goldenseal Root to boost there immune systems and other herbs but some still got sick. Am still am that not all of them got sick.
Am also having trouble w the weather so I know there feeling too.

Any ideas on how I can help them deal with the weather better?

I think he is still ill, and that you have not done anything to fight the source of infection. You've essentially cleaned out the "wound," but there is still infection present that needs to be treated or it will simply recur, and probably be more difficult to treat the next go-round.

My Silkie layed her first egg 2 days ago!!! It's soooo small! my 2 silkies are my first banties so i'm not used to tiny eggs

Some hens will late a "rooster egg" or as some call "egg farts" lol It is usually a beginning stage laying thing. It contains only egg white & no yoke! If you take it and place it somewhere, the inside will dryout and you'll end up with a cute little egg trophy!

I have a bunch in a basket that I take to poultry demos, the public love them!

You can flush the the nostrils with a Gallmyicin flush. You can get the directions from Peter Brown on how do this. This is what he recommends for infections in the nostrils.
