Silkie thread!

Yes, in the US "the more, the better". We do trim gently around the eyes, if necessary, to facilitate vision.

Is trimming around the eyes ok if the bird will be shown or is that just for the breeder pens?

Compare with dog shows (the king poodles). Trimming is part of the show ;-)

Also I prefer the US type for beauty. Is why I breed in my projects towards American looking type, but they never will be accepted for exhibition contests !!
There is a great difference between US and EU Silkies.
In EU we have the the "big" Silkies arround 2,000 Kg and we have the bantam Silkie arround 0,600 Kg.
The US Silkie is just one of arround 1,200 Kg, correct ?
In Germany is NOT accepted feathers on the middle toe so also the legs are only little feathered !
Nowhere here in EU is accepted the skull knob or vaulted skull, (males not have it here only some females).

Example of a German type Silkie

Wow! Those are some big differences!!

I'm not sure you are allowed to trim in the US.

One judge specifically told me to trim about the eyes if they cannot see.

APA and ABA have rules against faking. I suppose a judge could call trmming faking, but I fail to see how it is really any different than plucking, which pretty much everyone agrees is okay (except for tailfeathers in certain breeds, where it is very clearly spelled out). To me faking would be dying leakage on a blue or black bird so that it did not show, dubbing a single comb so that it looks like a cushion or walnut or even rose comb, lopping off extra toes, etc.

Feels like dog showing all over again. I agree, a dye job would be faking. That was so common in Pomeranians. It was hard to find a true black but they showed up in the ring all the time.

I've been afraid to trim anything around the eyes because the ones that have such heavy crests are the ones I'd like to try to show in the spring. I'll be careful and conservative.

I so glad to hear this. I was sure I read a breeders comments that it wasn't allowed. I am really glad to hear it is!

HI you all. We are hatching out some silkies right now in hopes that there will be a couple the kids can show at the county fair. Can you all tell me whatit means when they require the birds to be "dusted" before the fair? What is a gray silkie? I have not heard of this color. Also is there somewhere that I can read up about the basics of showing?

I assume that by "dusted" they are referring to mite/lice dusting, with something like Sevin Dust. As for Gray Silkies, there is a thread on here somewhere that shows pics and discusses the standard for them. Do a "search" in the Search Box at the top right hand corner of any page here for Grey or Gray Silkies. The Gray color is a recognized color, but seems very few people have them. I will definately be getting some in the future, they are gorgeous!!
